Brief History
The club was founded in 1930 and probably acquired its name from a Fr. John Russell who was a renowned and highly respected P.P. of Cloyne in the 1840's. It is based in the village of Shanagarry, about nine miles east of Midleton, and draws its support mainly from Churchtown South, Ballycotton, Garryvoe and Shanagarry itself. The club had an auspicious beginning when they annexed the East Cork Junior A football crown in their first year on the playing fields (1931) and added five Junior B Hurling titles along with U21 and Junior B Football titles over the following decades. In 2006 the club reached its first ever Junior A Hurling final after failing so many times in the past at the pen-ultimate stage. We weren't successful in our first attempt but with an excellent under-age structure in place, we are hopeful of adding our name to the Junior A Hurling roll of honour in the next few years.
